Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca

So there I was, chillin’ at SFO as we just received word of our second flight delay for our trip home. No worries…this week was awesome!! It’s always nice to roll back to Cali and enjoy all the good it has to offer and also remind oneself the many reasons I reside in Colorado.  Although this visit was spent in Nor Cal rather than So Cal, it was great to see the ocean and take a long drive down PCH. The exploration of cool venues like Candlestick Park, Stanford University and possibly the best road course in the United States…Laguna Seca!

The San Francisco Bay area was cool all week with temps in the mid 60’s, drizzle and minimal sunshine. As I was taking in the scenery, I was quickly reminded that the peeps in Cali take pride in use of their horns, if you don’t go on green…it’s much like being at the drag races…any delay will cost you a chance at making the next round, or in this case the next light. The style and atmosphere of Silicon Valley were much what I anticipated, but there are always those few that stand out. Mercedes, Audi, Jaguar, BMW and Maserati were all well represented. Acura and Cadillac seemed to be outdone by the less common, yet sportier Lotus and Ferrari. Regardless, one has to appreciate the respect for ownership and the cleanliness of the stylish rides…it’s a Cali thing…taking pride in your ride!

The highlight of the trip wasn’t the trip to the Fisherman’s Warf, or the ride over the Golden Gate Bridge or even lunch at “Pizza My Heart,” although those were all highlights in their own respect.  The highlight was the trip down Highway 1 to Monterey and the short ride over to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. As I made the turn through the gates and headed up the steep hills to the main entrance, I felt like a kid headed to Disneyland!! I wasn’t exactly sure what I was going to see, but I knew it was going to be cool. I remembered all the times I had watched races on TV, at the famed road course and I remember how drivers like Bobby Rahal used to dominate at this track. I always wondered how the AMA road racers made it through the “corkscrew” while carrying that much speed. Finally, I made it to the peak and started my decent into one of the coolest places I have ever been.

The Cooper Tires walk-over stood out as a piece of history, world renown as one of the centerpieces of this road course. As course workers were preparing for the upcoming “Red Bull US Grand Prix MotoGP World Championship” on July 22-24, we pretty much had free run of the place. We cruzed by the ticket headquarters and took the first turn toward the “corkscrew.” It was just cool to be there…standing on the track at the top of the “corkscrew” trying to take a picture that would do it justice…it reminded me when I was at the Daytona 500, standing on the track and trying to take a picture that would do it justice…seems to be a pattern here…none the less…it was Awesome!! We rolled down to pit lane and visited the premier box seating this sits above the pit boxes and then over to the Victory Lane podium that was used in last week’s Grand Am race.  It was cool to be in a place that has such positive energy.

Overall my trip Rocked! If you are ever in the area, I encourage you to take a little time and check out the place. The place is so spread out that there is plenty of room for camping and a self-guided tour. If you have any photography skills, I challenge you to try and capture the world famous “corkscrew” and send me a pic so I can add it to my album of Laguna Seca…

See you at the races…~Rico Childers

Mid Season Championship

This past 4th of July weekend, many tracks crowned their Mid Season Champions. Hard to believe that the racing season is at its half way point. If you are a true fan of short-track racing, then you were at the track this weekend. Tracks like Colorado National Speedway hosted two nights of racing with amazing fireworks displays for their fans, drivers, teams and families. Personally, I attended three different tracks, in three different states and viewed some great racing by the RCM drivers.

Friday night we rolled east to HiWay 92 Raceway Park in Gering, NE to watch BreAnn Adkison take on the field hometown yellow Bumble Bees. After hard contact with the turn three wall in the Main, her night was finished. Thank you to the many people who came over to assist, but it didnt matter if we had bought everthing at the Harbor Freight Garage/Shop Sale it was a lost cause, as the car was totalled.

Saturday night we rolled just south of FoCo to Dacono and Colorado National Speedway. Wendi Lewis had a great run in the Main and came home with a 9th place finish. Mark Sopr also had a strong run and finished his Main in 4th place. We had the priviledge of enjoying the evening with Alex & Cheryl Sheppard, sponsors on the #27s Sportsman. The fireworks after the races were awesome and the full house of spectators all had a great time.

Sunday, we rolled north to Big Country Speedway in Cheyenne, WY to watch the final night of racing for the long weekend. Gary Hobbs came home with a 2nd place finish in the Main. Mark Kelly stole the show, sweeping the night in the Super Stock division by setting Quick Time and winning the Heat and the Main. Marcus Kelly finished 2nd in the Warrior Main and BreAnn Adkison finished 4th in her back-up car.

Overall the Rico Childers MotorSports team is performing at a Season Championship level in the majority of classes that it races. Combined, the team has compiled 8 Main Event wins to go along with 24 Top 5 finishes, throught the mid point in the season. The second half of the season is always more competitive, as teams get their cars dialed in, find more speed in the car and drivers hit thier marks more consistently. It is also the time that attrition sets in; parts start to fail, engines let go and laydown racing oil all over the track, which leads to wrecks and tempers start to flare. All due to the fact that the Championship is on the line and for some teams is in clear sight.

There are still a few more months of hometown short-track racing and of summer for that matter, so grab the kids and head out to your local track for a night of family fun. After the races, take the kids into the pits as many drivers hand out candy, sign Hero Cards, and will let the little ones sit in their race cars. If you like fast cars, horsepower and sweet paint schemes, you will enjoy it as much as kids. By the way, you never know, your son or daughter could become a Mid Season Champion…

See you at the races…~Rico Childers

Get Off the Couch!

Like most things in life, attending the actual event is always better that watching it on TV or reading about. Take golf for example, to those who have never been out to swing a “weedwacker,” it appears to be an activity rather than a sport. When flipping through channels on the TV on a weekend, it’s a great watch to get one in the mood for a nap! I would have to say that Tennis and Horse Racing also fall into this category. The part about Horse Racing is the three hours of TV coverage for a race that only lasts a few minutes. So, for the avid armchair jockey, that’s a good long nap and waking up just in time to watch the race.  I have heard the same general comments made about NASCAR and autosport racing in general. Comments like: “Another left turn” or “race car drivers aren’t athletes” or “it’s like watching paint dry”….SERIOUSLY???

So, if you read my “About Me” page, you realize that I have a passion for racing…all kinds…especially those that include engines…two wheels or four, asphalt or dirt, local or national or even international like Formula 1. So when the armchair race car drivers want to take a shot at one of the most popular sports in this great land…I feel a need to educate them! Bottom line is that you have to get off the couch and get out of the house!!! It’s what your wife,  girlfriend and everyone else has been telling you…get out and experience life. It doesn’t matter if it’s golf, tennis, horse racing or skateboarding…don’t knock it till you try it or at least give it a chance. As a former avid golfer, I have spent plenty of afternoons on the course waiting for newbies to try and hit the ball, find their ball, and replace all the divots they take out of the course. It doesn’t bother me because they are out trying something new…if they don’t like it, no worries…at least they have tried it and for some they found a new hobby. The local parks of full of tennis courts and that is very inexpensive to try. Horse racing looks like a great event to attend…look at the Kentucky Derby and all those big hats the ladies wear. I think it would be cool to just to take it all in…that is definitely an elite group of affluent spectators.

Statistics show that over 2/3 of the U.S. population considers themselves stock car racing fans. Racing fans are also one of the most loyal fan groups of all sports in that over 95% of them will support the sponsors on their favorite driver’s car. That’s huge…especially in this economy. It’s the heart of summer and the 4th of July is just a weekend away…why not head out to your local track and take the family, significant other, the guys, the girls or all your peeps and check out what this sport is really about. Most tracks will have awesome fireworks displays, both on and off the track! To hometown drivers and teams, this is their hobby and also their passion. It’s what they do in their free time…all year long. Much like the two golf buddies, one bought his clubs from a pawn shop and the other has custom made clubs. Racing is no different, some teams have nothing but the best and others have what they can afford. The key is that both teams make the most of what they have and the do it because they have fun!

So this weekend, why not skip mowing the lawn and washing the car and get out and find your passion…or at least go experience the energy of what everyone else is passionate about…its time to Get Off the Couch!!

See you at the races…~Rico Childers

Victory Lane

I want to thank all the fans that came out to BCS this Saturday to watch the racing. It’s no secret, the track is struggling to keep the gates open, plagued by mis-management and too many different agendas. Currently, it appears that everyone is on board to help save it through the season. But it’s a vicious cycle; without a track drivers don’t have a place to race, without sponsors most drivers can’t afford to race, sponsors won’t advertise on race cars if they know the track might close, and fans don’t show up if they are not sure if there is racing….so in a nutshell, low car count=low fan count=low income=no local race track….it seems like a simple formula…not only for failure, but also one that can be reversed for success. It will be interesting to see if everyone figures it out before it’s too late. My hat is off to all those who have figured it out and have stepped up…there are a lot of them offering time and free services. RCM Marketing has offered our services, and all of the Rico Childers MotorSports drivers are offering there assistance as well…this is there home track! 60+ years of history in this 1/4 mile asphalt short-track…

Victory Lane in the Main, is this focus of our race team and a very important piece of the championship puzzle. Saturday night turned out to be a decent night at the BCS, as all 4 RCM cars that raced found Victory Lane. Gary Hobbs broke a rear hub in practice and was unable to race the #8 Late Model. Mark Sopr drove his #4 Grand American Modified to Victory Lane in the Heat & Main. Mark Kelly drove to his first Main win at BCS in the #01 Super Stock, after finishing 2nd in the Heat. BreAnn Adkison #7 Warrior, won the Heat but lost in the Main to teammate Marcus Kelly, after the field was reversed and the car were turned around and ran clockwise. Marcus rebounded from a 4th place finish in the Heat…BreAnn finished 3rd in the Main.

The weather was great on Saturday…the sun was out, the sky was blue and there wasn’t much of a breeze. Thank you to all the drivers that did show up to race and all the fans that were there to watch. I encourage all of those assisting to keep this track alive, to keep doing what you are doing, and everyone else please lend a hand if you can…not money, but a little time. This race is the “Big One” for Cheyenne….and one that must end in Victory Lane!!

See you at the races…~Rico Childers

Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day Weekend is the official kick-off of summer! In the western culture, black felt cowboy hats are exchanged for straw cowboy hats. In the business culture, long sleeve shirts and ties are exchanged for short sleeve golf and polo shirts. In the racing culture, the action heats up, as summer is in full swing and it’s time to get the race car dialed in and hit  championship stride. This is the time when teams head to the track, every weekend and the competition gets fierce. This is the meat of the season and a few points here and there, can win a championship or lose a championship.

Over the past month, many teams have been working on getting their race cars ready for the long stretch of summer. Adjusting to new rules and tire changes, drivers adjusting to new tracks and teams building chemistry and forming a family-style bond. All the hard work over the off-season will pay-off…for some…for others their lack of focus and time management will catch-up with them as they will find themselves behind the 8-ball, still searching to get the car dialed-in and get comfortable with what the car will do when they hang it out on the final turn of the last lap heading to the checkered flag.

Memorial Day weekend also marks the end of school for most youngsters and serves as a tribute to our men and women who fight for our freedom, so we can enjoy summer and head to the race track every weekend. Take time out of your weekend to say “Thank You” to a Vet or member of our military, post something on your Facebook page and let them know you appreciate what they do, so you can do what you do!! By the way, if you don’t have plans for the weekend, head to your local short track like Colorado National Speedway or Big Country Speedway. Bring the family…especially the little ones…they will love it and all for a great price…it’s family entertainment…the way it is supposed to be!!

See you at the races…~Rico

Opening Weekend at Big Country Speedway

Opening weekend at Big Country Speedway in Cheyenne, Wyoming proved to be a somewhat of a typical May day in the windy city. Temps ranged from 35-40 degrees with a breeze around 10-15 mph and wind chills in the low 30′s. Although the temps were cool, the action in the pits and on the track, provided fireworks of its own. It was the first day of the new season as drivers and teams rolled out their fresh new cars and paint schemes. It’s the day that teams circle on their calendars as the day all the off-season work ends and the fun begins…kind of… The overcast sky and cold temps put a damper on the fan attendance, but the drivers and teams got in somewhat of a “dress rehearsal” for the action that will continue through October. It was a time to get some much needed “seat time” and shake down the race cars, rub a little with rivals and spend a little extra time with their fans.

The Rico Childers MotorSports cars all had good runs, with 12 year old Marcus Kelly leading the field to the checkered flag in the Warrior division. BreAnn Adkison finished in 3rd place in the third race of her career. Mark Kelly was poised to finish 2nd in the Super Stock division, but cut down a right front tire on the final restart and finished 9th. Mark Sopr provided entertainment for the scarce number of fans in attendance, by bring out the “Brown Bucket.” It’s his old Thunder car that he runs when he has the night off for his “#4 Grand American Modified.” Gary Hobbs, driver of the #8 Late Model, finished in 3rd place after cutting a hole in the oil pan during practice. Some teams would load-up and head home after such a incident, but Hobbs team pulled together, fixed the problem and had the car ready by racetime….that’s just what Championship teams do…they pull together and get it done! It also helps to have four other teams that race under the same umbrella to lend a hand.

See you at the races…~Rico

Mother’s Day Weekend

Mother’s Day Weekend has always had a special place in my heart. I remember that was the day that my Mom would just shine. It was a time for a “special thanks” to the most compassionate, inspiring and motivating person that I have ever known in my life. The one that was always there for me and regardless of good or bad, she always would say “everything happens for a reason.” Remembering those words and all the images of such a spectacular lady, still inspire me today. Although I no longer have the privilege of spending time with her in person, I am blessed to be able to spend every minute with her in Spirit.

Yesterday, my race team, Rico Childers MotorSports, held a special Mother’s Day car show with our corporate sponsor, Fantastic Sams, as part of our marketing program.  All six drivers and teams brought out their new race cars for all the fans to see, get pictures and autographs. It was a time when the kids and Mom were able to sit in their favorite race car and strap in with the 5-point harness. The expression on their faces was just priceless. Although they didn’t get to fire them up and take them for a spin, one could see that they were visualizing the experience as they peered out the front windshield, grasping the steering wheel.

It was a special day for everyone and it’s just what we do. Making a positive difference in the lives we touch, paying it forward and sharing our racing family’s blessings with all of our fans. Hope your day was as sensational as ours!

See you at the races…~Rico

It’s the Summertime!

Spring Fever is at its highest as temps start to stay on the warmer side, the grass is green, flowers and trees are blooming, and its finally nice outside:) The kids are ready to get out of school and final exams are the chatter on Facebook. It’s time to break out the shorts and see if they are too big or too small, time to tune up the bike and break out the camping gear for another sensational summer in Colorado. The sky is deep blue, the breeze is calm and the sun warms the body to a sweat…the snow capped mountains to the west make for a picturesque view.

Did I mention that its also time for local short track racing? Yes it is! All the work over the off season brings new cars, fresh paint, new sponsor graphics, new Hero Cards and maybe even a few more horses under the hood. Saturday Night Racing at “Colorado National Speedway” kicked of over a month ago and the majority of tracks will start their summer programs this month. Stock car racing is what summer is all about, it’s a great time to grab the family and your friends and head out to your local track. Male and Female drivers race to win and they also race for their fans! Pulling on to the track and seeing the stands full, adds to the adrenaline rush to put on a show and drive to Victory Lane! Regardless if its your first time or 100th, its a great way to spend and evening….after all, “It’s the Summertime!”

See you at the races…~Rico

This Weekend’s Hike

I enjoyed an Awesome hike this weekend at Young Gulch in the Poudre Canyon, just northwest of Fort Collins, CO. The weather was a perfect 30-40 degrees with a light snow, excellent temps for a 9+ mile hike. Although there were only three of us that ventured out, Lara, Tarah and I had a great time. I was a bit surprised at the numbers of runners on the trail. As we passed them while we were on our way down and they were headed up, I couldn’t help but notice that none of them appeared to be breathing hard, not even their dogs. I guess that just goes to show that with a little bit of exercise, motivation and determination, one can live a healthy lifestyle and keep in shape!

It’s Spring! Get out and enjoy life, and remember…”sometimes you just have to learn to dance in the rain.”

See you at the races…~Rico
